Doaba peaceful despite clash, bid to capture booth

JALANDHAR: District recorded a poll percentage of 77.4% while Hoshiarpur recorded poll percentage of around 70%. Overall polling in Doaba region remained peaceful for the most part, except for a clash between two parties at Bharowana village of . Polling was suspended for some time due to the incident, which started with a dispute over a voter.

It is learnt that in the course of an altercation between polling agents of two candidates for the post of , a few persons scaled the boundary wall of the polling station, a government school in the village. They barged inside the polling booth and tried to capture it. However, polling staff and police personnel deployed at the spot foiled the attempt.

On receiving information, ADC Rahul Chaba, Sultanpur Lodhi SDM Charu Mitra and DSP Tejbir Singh rushed to the spot with more force. Polling resumed after one hour.

?Some persons tried to capture the booth. We have registered a case on the complaint of the presiding officer against 40 to 50 unidentified persons and have started the process of identifying them from video clips of the incident. A case has been registered under sections 353, 186, 294 and 171C of the IPC,? said DSP Tejbir Singh.

Five persons were injured in the clash. Police searched a car which appeared to be from outside the village and recovered a pistol. ?A pistol was recovered and three youths were arrested while two managed to escape. A case has been registered against them,? the DSP said.
